The card plays into the tradition of Christmas music and caroling, as whenever you deal damage with it, you hum notes from a "festive tune" equal to the amount of damage you deal and then it gains a +1/+1 counter if you can do it successfully

Its not an obviously powerful effect and, on its own, its not all that great

It would allow you to show the creature to your opponent (you also had to say, "It's coming," but hey, it was an Un - set) and because he was so scary, it would cause your opponent to lose life

Manufacturing tolerances can vary, and forcing a tight fit can warp a valuable foil

Being able to immediately cast a cheap tutor target is especially nice

Now, technically, not using the "choose one" text makes the card play different in certain scenarios (for example, a Naturalize can be redirected from an artifact to enchantment where a modal card cannot change modes when redirected), but for most practical uses they are almost identical
